SEVERE ACNE

Acne treatment for severe acne is imperative. Severe acne affects not only a person's skin, but also their entire life. It can cause stress, embarrassment, and low self-esteem. Severe acne can even affect a person's social life and employment.

Severe acne can disfigure a person. It can sometimes take years to bring about any improvement with acne treatment. A person suffering from severe acne should see a dermatologist for acne treatment immediately.

Dermatologists divide severe acne up into the following four different types (in alphabetical order):
  • Acne Conglobata - is a form of severe acne usually affecting adults between the ages of eighteen and thirty. Those with acne conglobata suffer from widespread blackheads, abscesses, scarring, inflammation, and skin damage. Inflamed nodules form around blackheads. They slowly increase in size until they burst open with pus. Deep abscesses form, leading to scarring. Acne conglobata can flare up even in acne dormant for years. Men suffer from acne conglobata more than women do. Acne treatment for acne conglobata may include antibiotics and acne treatment medications including topical ointments.

  • Acne Fulminans - is a form of severe acne characterized by inflammatory acne. Acne fulminans causes a rapidly destructive inflammation in the skin. Those with acne fulminans suffer from fever, aching joints, acne ulcers, and inflammation. Acne treatment for acne fulminans may include steroids and inflammatory medicine.

  • Gram-Negative Folliculitis - is a form of severe acne characterized by inflamed follicles due to a bacterial infection. Many times this is a result of antibiotic treatments taken over a long period. Acne sufferers undergoing acne treatment for other types of severe acne often develop gram-negative folliculitis from bacteria that is antibiotic resistant. Acne treatment for gram-negative folliculitis may include extra strong antibiotics to fight the drug resistant bacteria.

  • Nodulocystic Acne - is a form of severe acne with large inflamed cysts. These painful cysts may be large and occur in one location or all over. They are typically infected and filled with thick yellow pus. They can destroy the skin. This type of severe acne requires aggressive acne treatment, which may include steroids, antibiotics, or surgery.
