DO IT RIGHT

Acne treatment medications can clear up acne - but only if you use them! The way you apply topical acne treatment medications can affect how well your acne treatment will work. The following tips will help you get the most from your topical acne treatment medications.
  • Keep Your Acne Treatment Medication Where You Will See It - Put your medication out in plain view. If you see it, you are more likely to use it. Put it by your toothbrush, beside your bed, or even in the kitchen. Anywhere you will consistently see it is the perfect place.

  • Wait After Washing - Wait fifteen minutes or so after washing your face before applying your acne treatment medication. Your medication will be more effective if applied on a dry face. Even if you pat your face dry with a towel, wait a few minutes for some air-drying time.

  • Use Your Acne Treatment Medication as Directed - Do not use more acne treatment medication than directed thinking that it will work faster. If your acne treatment medication says to apply it twice a day, then apply it twice a day. Using medications as directed increases the effectiveness and decreases the possibility of side effects.

  • Apply Acne Treatment Medications to the Entire Area - Do not just put a little dab on the center of a blemish. Apply medications to the entire area prone to acne to maximize effectiveness.

  • Thin Applications Are Better Than Thick Globs - Several thin applications delivers a more effective concentration of the medication than one giant glob. A glob will dry and fall off. A think application will stay put.

  • Stop if You Experience Itching, Stinging, Peeling, Redness, or Dry Skin - This means you have irritated skin. Make sure you are using a mild acne cleanser that does not have alcohol as an ingredient. Stop using any lotions with alpha-hydroxy acid or salicylic acid. Stop using toners and masks. Do not exfoliate and make sure you are using your acne treatment medication as directed.

  • Do Not Expect Your Acne to Clear Up Overnight - Acne treatment medication does work if you give it time. It can take six to eight weeks to see an improvement. Depending on the severity of your acne, it can take months to see a difference.
